In 2002, I took a class on beginner machine applique at Fabric Depot. We didn't make finished projects there, but did three quilt squares using different applique techniques. I made two of the squares into pillows that I gave to Cassie & Christy Knierim for Christmas 2002. Both squares were made with fabric scraps I already had, and then I bought coordinating fabric for the pillow.

I also made a pillow for niece Rebecca's 14th birthday in January 2003. Her mom, Sharon, gave me a pillow sham and a paint chip and asked me to make a pillow that would match those colors. I cut up the sham to use in the quilt and bought fabric that coordinated with both the sham and the paint chip. I chose the pattern from Quilt In A Day Almanac, which has a dozen interesting squares.
